Diwali is not one evening. It is a run of days, each with its own ritual and its own mood, and in 2026 it stretches from Friday 6 November to Wednesday 11 November. Most people buy one big gift and hand it over on Lakshmi Puja night. That works, but it misses the point of the other days, and it means everything lands on the busiest delivery date of the year.
A better plan: spread small, well-timed gestures across the week, and save the main gift for the day it fits best.
The 2026 dates at a glance
| Day | Date | What it is about |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday, 6 November | Buying metal for prosperity and good health |
| Choti Diwali | Saturday, 7 November | Cleaning out the old, lighting the first diyas |
| Lakshmi Puja (Diwali) | Sunday, 8 November | The main puja, the lights, the family evening |
| Govardhan Puja | Tuesday, 10 November | Annakut, the mountain of food offered to Krishna |
| Bhai Dooj | Wednesday, 11 November | Brothers and sisters |
You will notice Monday 9 November is missing. That is not an error. Festival days follow the lunar tithi, not the calendar, and this year the tithis fall so that Govardhan Puja moves a day after Diwali instead of coming right next to it. Some regions and panchangs may differ by a day, so if your family follows a specific one, go by that.
Day 1: Dhanteras, 6 November
The day is named after dhan (wealth) and teras (the thirteenth lunar day). It also honours Dhanvantari, the god of medicine, which is why health matters as much as money in the rituals. Families buy something in metal, even if it is a single steel spoon, as a sign of welcome to prosperity.
What to gift: something in silver, brass or copper that she will use or wear, not just store in a locker. A silver coin is the traditional choice. A copper bottle is the overlooked one, and it ties nicely to the health side of the day.

Day 2: Choti Diwali, 7 November
Choti Diwali, also called Narak Chaturdashi or Roop Chaudas in some homes, is about clearing away what is old. Many women wake early for an abhyang snan, an oil and ubtan bath, before the rest of the family is up. By evening, the first diyas go out on the doorstep.
What to gift: this is the self-care day of the festival, and the least crowded with expectations. A small pampering kit or a good candle set lands well here, precisely because nobody else is giving anything today.

Day 3: Lakshmi Puja, 8 November
The main event. The house is clean, the rangoli is done, the puja happens at dusk, and then the lights and the sweets and the visitors. This is when the big gift usually changes hands, and if it is jewellery or a saree, give it in the morning or early afternoon so she can actually wear it to the puja.
What to gift: something she will wear tonight, or something for the home that becomes part of every Diwali after this one.

Day 4: Govardhan Puja, 10 November
Govardhan Puja marks the story of Krishna lifting the Govardhan hill to shelter the people of Braj from Indra's storm. In many homes the women spend the morning cooking the Annakut, sometimes fifty or more dishes, as an offering. In Maharashtra and Gujarat the same day is Padwa, when husbands traditionally give their wives a gift.
What to gift: after the longest cooking day of the year, give her a break, not a kitchen gadget. A massager or a comfortable throw says "sit down" better than words.

The order-by dates that matter
Diwali week is when couriers are busiest and cancellations are most common. Work backwards:
- Gifts going to another city: order by Saturday 31 October. That leaves room for a delay and still lands before Dhanteras.
- Gifts in your own city: order by Monday 2 November.
- Fresh flowers, cakes and plants: these can be same-day in most metros, but slots on 8 November sell out. Book the slot a few days ahead, or see our same-day delivery picks.
- Anything personalised or engraved: add two to three days for making. If it is not ordered by the end of October, choose something ready-made instead.
A simple way to plan it
Pick one main gift and decide which day it belongs to. Then add one small gesture for two other days: a silver coin on Dhanteras, a candle on Choti Diwali, an evening off on Govardhan Puja. It costs less than one large gift, and she will remember the week rather than one box.
And on the card, skip the "Happy Diwali" and write one specific line about her. If you need a nudge, our guide on writing a gift card message helps.
