Karwa Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October. She will eat sargi before sunrise, go the entire day without food or water, dress up for the evening puja, and wait for the moon. Most guides tell her how to do the fast. This one is for the person she is fasting for.
The date and the moon
The Chaturthi tithi runs through most of 29 October, and the fast ends when the moon is sighted. In north Indian cities like Delhi and Jaipur, moonrise is expected roughly between 8:15 and 8:25 pm. It is later in some cities and earlier in others, and clouds can delay the sighting, so check the time for your city on the day.
A useful habit: find out the moonrise time the night before, and know which window or terrace will give the clearest view. Standing on the roof refreshing a weather app at 8:40 pm is not a good look.
What her day actually looks like
- Before sunrise: sargi, often prepared by her mother-in-law. Fruit, dry fruits, sweets, mathri and something filling.
- The day: no food, no water. Many women still go to work or run the house.
- Evening: getting ready, mehendi often done a day or two before, then the Karwa Chauth katha and puja with other women.
- Moonrise: she views the moon, then you, through a sieve, offers water to the moon, and you give her the first sip of water and bite of food.
The husband's checklist
These are small, and they matter more than the gift.
- Wake up for sargi. Sit with her, even if you are half asleep. It sets the tone for the day.
- Take something off her plate. Handle the school run, the groceries or the cooking. If you can, keep your evening free.
- Don't eat in front of her. Obvious, but it happens. Many husbands fast alongside, fully or partly. Your call, but don't announce it as a favour.
- Know the moonrise time and the best spot to see it, as above.
- Have water and her favourite food ready to break the fast, and plan a proper dinner.
- Give the gift before the puja, so she can wear it if it's jewellery or clothing.
- If you're away, schedule a video call before moonrise and send flowers or a cake to arrive in the evening.
A word on health
A nirjala fast is hard on the body. If she is pregnant, nursing, diabetic or on regular medication, encourage her to talk to her doctor first. Many families are comfortable with a modified fast that includes water or fruit, and it is a kind thing to support that choice without guilt.
What to give her
Traditional gifts like bangles, a saree or a puja thali never go wrong. If she already has plenty, choose something modern she can wear every day.
Gold-plated bangle set
Festive shine for Karwa Chauth and Diwali without the price of real gold.
Modern everyday mangalsutra
A slim, office-friendly design for the newly married woman who wears it daily.
Banarasi silk saree
An heirloom-style gift for big occasions. Ask her sister about colours she already owns.
Preserved rose in a glass dome
A real rose treated to last for years. Romantic without being one-day-only.
On a smaller budget, flowers and a cake delivered that evening, plus a handwritten note, will mean as much as anything expensive.
Red velvet heart cake
Heart-shaped, cream-cheese frosted and very much about the two of you.
Oxidised silver jhumkas
Goes with kurtas, sarees and even denim. Every wardrobe needs one more pair.
