Diwali gifts for the women who help run your home

Diwali gift ideas for your house help, cook or nanny, from practical gifts to the bonus, with timing and etiquette so the gift lands with respect.

The most important gift is on time

The women who clean, cook and look after children in our homes have their own Diwali to prepare for. Their families need new clothes, sweets and diyas too, and they shop with whatever arrives from the households they work in. A gift or bonus handed over on Diwali morning is too late to help with any of that.

So the first rule is simple: give it at least a week before Diwali. In 2026, that means by Sunday 1 November, with Diwali on the 8th.

The bonus

In many Indian cities, an extra month's pay at Diwali is the common practice for full-time help, and many households give a proportionate amount to part-time workers. Whatever you decide, give it in cash or by transfer, separately from her regular salary, so it is clearly a festival bonus and not an advance. Don't adjust it later against leave.

Gifts she will actually use

The best gifts are practical, good quality and for her, not hand-me-downs. Ask yourself what she carries, wears or uses every day. A tiffin that keeps her lunch warm, a proper blanket before winter, a new saree for the festival itself.

Sweets for her family

Give her the same mithai or dry fruit box you are giving your relatives, not a smaller one or what is left over. It is a small thing, and it is noticed.

If she has children

Ask her what the children need. School bags, stationery, a winter jacket or a storybook set often means more to a mother than anything for herself. If she would prefer cash for them, respect that.

How to give it

  • Hand it over yourself, with a thank you, not through someone else or left on the counter.
  • Keep used items separate. Old clothes and utensils can be offered any time of year, if she wants them. The Diwali gift should be new.
  • Give a paid day off around Diwali, ideally announced in advance so she can plan travel or family time.
  • Ask, don't assume. "Is there something your family needs this Diwali?" is a perfectly respectful question.
